Post-College Debt

I unfortunately expect to owe money when I graduate from college.

A few ways you can avoid college debt is by...

1. Saving and investing for future college costs. For instance, a 529 education savings plan (named after the applicable section of the IRS code) is an effective way to start. Every state offers at least one 529 savings plan, and a total of more than $135 billion is invested in roughly 7 million such plans

2. Avoid getting a credit card

3. Apply for financial aid

4. Apply for as many scholarships and grants as you can.

5. Get a part time job to help pay for school.

Repaying:

-Your repayment schedule begins after a grace period expires. This is a period of time after you finish your education, during which you may make payments but are not required to. The grace period also begins if you begin attending less than half of a full class schedule.

The length of the grace period varies with the kind of loan you have.

-For a loan processed through the Direct Loan Program, or for a Family Education Loan, the grace period lasts six months.

-For a Perkins Loan, the grace period lasts nine months.

-PLUS loans have no grace period and are due when the loan is fully disbursed. Then the first payment has to be made within 60 days.

Interest on loans are annual percentage rate (APR).

Summer Camp Counselor

  • Although Whittier is expensive, keep in mind that is it a private school. There are many benefits to attending a private school. For instance

  • the student to faculty ration is 1 to 12
  • class sizes are smaller (the average class size is 19 students, smaller than a high school class!)
  • There are Faculty Masters' Houses. Select faculty live on campus and host educational and social experiences for students, enhancing the sense of community and faculty/student interaction.

Service Related Clubs

Circle K: An international community service organization sponsored by a Kiwanis club which blends community service and leadership training with the opportunity to meet other college students at service projects, conferences and conventions.

Interfaith Programs

Christian Poets: Christian Poets seek to communicate God's love to the campus and to encourage the spiritual growth of its members through prayer, worship, fellowship and discipleship. The group takes part in weekly worship services.
