Mainstream Pop
Rock and Roll
- Song important, not performance
- Focus on writing/publishing songs, then getting many people to perform them
How is this different from music today?
What is your preference?
Blending of 3 styles:
- Mainstream Pop- average middle class, white consumer
- Country/Western- rural farming communities
- Rhythm & Blues- urban and African American
Music Business
before 1955
- Driven by music publishers- get songwriters to write songs and publish them
- Sold songs by selling sheet music- store pianists would play sheet music before people bought it; people took home to play it themselves
- Many homes had pianos, several family members could play
On your own piece of paper...
Write at least 3 sentences.
What do you prefer: Recording the same song many times using different artists in different genres, or having a song be only recorded by one particular artist? Why?
Songwriters vs. Singers
- Thought of as two different kinds of people
- Songwriters wrote, but were not expected to perform their songs
- Performers were "song stylists"; song was one entity and performance was another
- Changed in Rock and Roll: people who wrote the songs are the ones performing them
