Socio-Cultural Influences

Chapter 5: Socio-cultural influences

1 . Identify WHAT social groups CAN INFLUENCE SOMEONES participation IN SPORT.

2. Discuss IMPACT OF stereotypes in SPECIFIC sports.

Levels of engagement can differ between different social groups.

The following can all influence how an individual engages with sport;

- Gender

- ethnicity / religion / culture

- age

- family / peers

- disability

What might stop people from participating in activity or sport?

Factors affecting participation

  • Attitudes
  • Role models
  • Accessibility
  • Media coverage
  • Sexism / stereotyping
  • Culture / religious festival
  • Family commitments
  • Available leisure time
  • Familiarity
  • Education
  • Disposable income
  • Adaptability/inclusiveness

Gender

Stereotypical views;

  • Women lack strength to do what men can do
  • Women who are competitive are not feminine
  • Too much physical activity limits a woman's ability to give birth
  • Women who train hard become 'butch' or 'male-like'
  • Woman's role is to be the carer, mother and manager of the home

Sport is male-dominated

Media coverage - less of it/not relevant as focuses on their personal life/appearance

Role models - less female role models in sport than men

Money - less funding, salaries, sponsorship, prize money

Less support from peers/family

Facilities for women have developed slower than those for males

In 2010 Amy Fearn became the first woman to referee a football league game.

Ethnicity

The particular culture in which an individual lives has a significant influence on their life and their level of participation.

An ethnic group is a social group that shares the same cultural traditions or religion.

The imbalance in level of participation in sport and at elite level are due to a RANGE of factors; there is no single one reason.

How might ethnicity affect participation?

  • Limited to sports that are traditionally associated with their culture
  • Many people from ethnic minority groups are also in lower socio-economic groups - less disposable income
  • Cultural and religious traditions e.g. fasting
  • Some cultures dress codes make participation more challenging

Identify possible factors that could have prevented Tahmna from continuing to participate in Athletics justifying your choices.

110m sprinter

Tahmna Kohistani

Knowledge of factors - very detailed

Application to Tahmna - clear & appropriate

Justification - well reasoned

Due to his religious beliefs, cricketer Monty Panesar wears his patka when he plays

Gold

Knowledge of factors - some more detailed than others

Application to Tahmna - appropriated but lacks detail

Justification - well reasoned for some but not all factors.

Silver

Many Muslims fast during the religious period of Ramadan which can affect their performance when training and competing.

Knowledge of factors - very limited

Application to Tahmna - no there or inappropriate

Justification - no reasonable conclusion

Bronze

Some devout Christians refuse to train on compete on Sundays Due to religious beliefs

Example: Jonathan Edwards - it cost him the chance to take part in 1991 World Championships

AGE

THINK-PAIR-SHARE

How does this photo link to participation in sport?

Physical changes caused by ageing have a huge impact on participation

Flexibility decreases with age- Joints

are not as supple. Effects performance in certain activities.... Examples??????

Strength decreases as we get older.

How can this effect performance? Examples......

Skill levels can improve - skills, ability to perform improve

Tidal volume/stroke volume decreases

Makes it harder to get oxygen to the working muscles

Injuries longer to recover - injuries take longer to heal because of wear and tear on the body. more chance of suffering

disorders and diseases.

'Life sports' such as these provide people of all ages, particularly elderly people, with an opportunity to - why might this be???

Family, Friends & Peers

Disability

A physical or mental impairment that has substantial that limits a person's movements, senses or activities.

There are 3 main categories of impairments;

1. Mobility

2. Sensory

3. Mental

Barriers to participation

  • Coaches - Limited number of experienced/fully qualified coaches
  • Facilities - not all have been fully adapted
  • Travel - can be problematic as they may be reliant on disability benefits

Disability

Increased media coverage - achievements of sportspeople with disabilities are beginning to be recognized and celebrated.
