These two were forced to get married because Zeus, the father of Aphrodite, was punishing Aphrodite.
He arranged a marriage to take place and not even Aphrodite could disobey him. Aphrodite knew she had to marry Hephaestus but not force her to remain faithful to him.

The Affair
When Ares and Aphrodite snuck off together and Hephaestus covered them with a gold net: they were caught in the net. Hephaestus asked all the gods to come judge his unfaithful wife, Aphrodite. But to his dismay, they found the situation hilarious. Hephaestus eventually freed Ares and Aphrodite from the net.

Aphrodite knew she had to marry Hephaestus but had no plans to stay faithful to him. She soon struck a romance with Ares, the god of war.When Helios saw them together he then told Hephaestus. Wanting to see the cheating pear with his own eyes, Hephaestus made a net of gold chains so thin it was nearly invisible.
