North Korea was occupied by the USSR which established a communist government modeled after theirs. South Korea was occupied by the USA which established a democratic government.

The Problem

In the End

  • The two parts of Vietnam were reunited under a communist government.
  • Thousands of South Vietnamese fled to the United States

Today

The Communist North wanted to unite the country under the communist government, the non-communist south did not want a communist government. For three years each side pushed or was pushed back and forth across the 38th parallel. Neither side was willing to compromise.

Pick a Side

Along the 38th there is an area that is constantly watched for threats of attack. Neither side has given up their want to reunite but refuse to give up their governments. Troops from each of the supporting countries continue to patrol the zone.

While 500,000 Americans were sent to help with the fight, some Americans disagreed with our involvement in the war. In 1969 President Nixon began to withdraw troops from Vietnam.
