Favorite Part

My favorite part was when they were heading to the swamps and the fights with animals at the end.

The song I chose to go along with this book was "Demons", by Imagine Dragons. I chose this song because Cort had to fight many demons in the swamp- snakes, wild hogs, bears, flood waters and his fear of death.

Theme

The theme of the story is survival and perseverance. Cort relies on the skills his father taught him to help himself and the girls survive. He also never gives up; he is terrified but he is determined to go get help for Liza who has been snake bit. He has to swim through a swamp with poisonous snakes, alligators and other animals and isn't sure where he is going

What [Part 2]

They go through very scary times walking through the water to try to get to the mounds. The mounds are no safer with wild poisonous snakes, bears and hogs everywhere. Cort leaves to try to find help for Liza because she was bit by a poisonous snake. She and Francie will die if he doesn't do something.

What [Part 1]

Cort, Liza, and Francie find themselves alone during the hurricane. Cort's Dad left to take care of Cort's mom and couldn't make it back. The houseboat they are on, starts to sink. They have to make the difficult decision and leave their dog Catfish on the sinking boat.

Recommendations

Setting

I would recommend this book because it is dramatic and interesting to read. It's impressive to see Cort's survival skills and how brave he is trying to help himself and the girls survive.

The story takes place on the Alabama Coast at Bottle Creek. Most of the setting is in the swamp and on the mounds during the hurricane.

Characters

The main characters in the story are: Cort, Liza, Francie, Mrs. Stovall, Cort's Dad & Jason.

• Cort is the main character. He is very brave, strong and reliable. He helps to save the girls throughout the storm.
• Liza is also a main character. She is thoughful, brave, and respectful.
• Francie is the last main character. She is scared, shy and worried.
• Cort's Dad is also a big role; He is brave and strong, & angry at times.
• Mrs. Stovall is a helpful character. She is nice and smart.
• Jason is a character but he isn't a big role in the story; he is a neighbor of Cort's but not frequently mentioned.
