Based on Korea's own experiences,

KOICA staffs build 'self-improvement' model

called 'The Saemaul Movement'

-The New Community Movement, also

known as the Saemaul Movement was

a political initiative launched in the 1970s

to modernize the rural South Korean

economy.

- At first,

the way of helping developing countries is

'giving financial aid for investment directly.

- Nowadays, it changed to 'helping building self-

improvement model' from 'just giving financial aid'

- The idea was based on the Korean traditional communalism called Hyang-yak and Doorae, which provided the rules for self-governing and cooperation in traditional Korean communities

Civil Society Cooperation Programs by KOICA

Why KOICA?

- Designed to provide assistance for civil society organizations with the objectives of reducing poverty and promoting welfare.

- This 'self-improvement' projects are unlikely to take place on an intergovernmental level, which focus on on-site concerns such as education, medical service, and income generation.

- This presentation aims to introduce the role and contributions of KOICA, Korea International Cooperation Agency, the agency which is related to aiding other developing countries.

- On my backpacking trip to Africa, I faced the difficulties of developing 'African' countries . Also, I met some KOICA staffs helping them sincerely.
