Usual Characters

www.playbuzz.com

Usual characters in a post apocalyptic world is the protagonist or protagonists are surviving on their own or in packs, and oftentimes the “hero” of the story has outstanding survival skills and can figure out how to survive in this new world. As with most novels written for teens, adults can be absent in post-apocalyptic novels. However, it is not uncommon to have an adult in a post-apocalyptic novel positioned as an evil figurehead, or the one person our hero or heroes are trying to find or keep safe. Post-apocalyptic novels can have elements of other genres in their story. The most common is to have dystopian governments in place.

4. Examples

Examples for this subgenre is the movie known as “War of the Worlds”, which is about a galactic being taking over the world. They use machines called tripods to evaporate or suck humans blood for fertilizer. Another one is Apocalyptic, holocaust, and post-apocalyptic stories focus on the end of the world, or the world just after "the end." In Niven and Pournelle's Lucifer's Hammer, society is wiped out by a comet and must rebuild; in Nevil Shute's On the Beach, humanity is destroyed by a nuclear holocaust; in Stephen King's The Stand, humanity must cope with the aftermath of a devastating plague.

Within this genre, the disaster is usually an alien invasion, a nuclear war, a pandemic, or a natural disaster. The development of technology plays a large role in these films and often serves as the source of conflict. While many films in this subgenre center around the disaster, many focus on the post-apocalyptic state of the world.

One item from the cheat sheet provided by my teacher which is on bulletin three which states: “ Characters that include aliens, mutants, androids, or humanoid robots”. Another item is from bulletin 6 which states: “ New and different political or social systems, e.g. dystopia, post-scarcity, or a post-apocalyptic situation where organized society has collapsed”. And the third item is from bulletin 13 which states: “Some of the aliens encountered can be friendly, though some are usually hostile to create conflict. Stories reflect the knowledge of the times (for example, the use non-traditional means of travel-such as wormholes and warring nations that want power- such as Ender’s Games).

Apocalyptic science fiction is a subgenre of

science fiction that is concerned with the end of civilization, through nuclear war, plague, or some other general disaster. Post-apocalyptic science fiction is set in a world or civilization after such a disaster. The time frame may be immediately after the catastrophe, focusing on the travails or psychology of survivors, or considerably later, often including the theme that the existence of pre-catastrophe civilization has been forgotten or mythologized. Post-apocalyptic stories often take place in an agrarian, non-technological future world, or a world where only scattered elements of technology remain.
