Rise of Fear

The book shows the public fear of a nuclear war (the same type of fear that went around during the Cold War) and you can tell my the constant news on the radios and televisions in the book, that most Americans tried to keep up to date on what was happening between them and the Soviet Union

New Technologies

Both the Soviet Union and the United Stated had advanced in war technologies at this time, and many such as missiles and bombs are shown in the book.

Connection #2

  • Alas, Babylon also connects to the civil rights movement

Connections

  • Alas, Babylon connects to the historical event of the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, and the threat of nuclear war.

Discrimination

Nuclear War

The book shows what would have happened if the tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet Union rose, and nuclear war begun

  • In this time period(50's and 60's), many people still don't believe in equal rights for African Americans.
  • We see in the book that when Randy says he believes in "all of the constitution" he means he believes in equality for all. This leads him to an unsuccessful campaign because most Americans disagree with that.

The Henry's

  • In the novel we are also introduced to the Henry family, who we see being discriminated throughout the story.
  • They live on a small amount of land, and Missouri works as a maid, which was typical for African Americans at the time.
