Energy WISE Team 2014-15

Lindley Elementary School

Conservation

Energy Patrols

The team patrols the school to make sure classrooms and other rooms in the school are using good energy saving habits. Students leave a message at each classroom/room to give feedback about how they are doing. The room either gets a compliment or an "oops you forgot" message. This patrol raises awareness about what good energy habits should look like.

Energy Captains in Every Classroom

Pumps of 2,

Save a Few

Plug Load Study

The Energy WISE team participated in a plug load study. One of Guilford County Schools Energy WISE advisors came to Lindley and facilitated a plug load study. Students learned about phantom loads, CFL light bulbs, kilawatt meters and the reality of how much it costs to run to things that use electricity. This activity promoted awareness about the different ways students can save energy at school and at home.

Students are responsible for making sure lights are shut off and electrical items are turned off before leaving the classroom. Students take this responsibility very seriously; they are learning good energy habits they can share with their families and use at home.

The Energy WISE team led a paper towel saving campaign at school that included hand-made signs for every paper towel dispenser in the school. The signs encouraged students to only pump twice on the handle to save paper towels. The signs reminded students that saving paper towels would save trees.

Occupancy Sensors

We used the money received from a grant from the U.S. Green Building Council to install 16 more occupancy sensors in our school. We had installed occupancy sensors last year in all of the the bathrooms and this year we have installed them in the gym and many classrooms. Students are excited to see that we are saving even more energy.

Recycling

Lindley has a student-run recycling program in place all year. There are recycling cans in every classroom and bottle recycling containers in the cafeteria and other locations. Students are responsible for emptying the recycling cans three times per week. This program is completely student run; the students have taken ownership of this program and are happy to be keeping these items out of the landfills and recycled to make new items.

Blue Jeans Go Green

Students collected denim items from the community and the families at school to be recycled into insulation for houses and buildings. The insulation is used in Habitat for Humanity Houses locally and other buildings in communities in need all around the country. Lindley collected over 200 pairs of jeans to be made into insulation for families in need.

Sustainability Book Collection Added to School Library

Collection of recyclable items for Family Science Night

Planet Protectors Club

Upcycling

The Energy WISE team used some of the money they won last year in the Scotties Trees Rock contest to purchase books about recycling, caring for the earth and living a "green" lifestyle. Every student in the school can check out these books to learn more about how they can care for the earth and have better energy saving habits.

Students collected plastic containers and glass jars to be used for numerous science actiivities for Family Science Night. Students learned that we can reduce the number of items that are thrown away by using them for other

purposes.

Students from grades 3-5 had the opportunity to participate in an after-school club led by the Energy WISE advisor. The club taught students about having better energy saving habits that they could share with their classmates and families. Students chose to learn about this topic and were excited to learn what they can do to help the earth.

Teaching Students to Care for the Earth

Greensboro Beautiful Award

Terracycle - Recycling Writing Instruments and Giving to Charity at the Same Time

Lindley Elementary won an award in August 2014 for the making of the "Scotties Trees Rock" video. This video was made by the students of the Energy WISE team and focused on the importance of trees. Students spoke in the video about the many reasons why trees are important. The video was shown on the internet and local television. Lindley came in 5th place nationally in the contest and won $4000.

Pens, markers, and other writing instruments are broken down and used to make other items. We are given money for each marker and pen made by the Papermate/Sanford company to give to the charity of our choice. We have been giving money to Greensboro Urban Ministry for the last three years.

U.S. Green Building Council North Carolina Award

Lindley won the Environmental Stewardship award for recycling, energy conservation, and best media in North Carolina from the NC division of the US Green Building Council.

Light Bulb Audit

Guilford County Schools Energy WISE mentor Elizabeth Keele came to Lindley to perform a light bulb audit with the Energy WISE team. The students learned about different types of light bulbs and how much it costs to keep them on during the school year. She also talked about how this exercise can be applied to the lights the students use at home.
