Overgeneralization & The Irregular Past Tense

Student Information

- Mary is a 1st grade student in Greeley, CO.

- Her 1st language is Spanish

- She began learning English in kindergarten

English Language Proficiency

- "Mary's" overall language proficiency score was a 4.3 and it was recommended she receive ELA support.

- She still demonstrates difficulty with irregular past tense although, she has mastered regular past tense. According to Krashen, acquisition of irregulars should occur first.

Lesson Objective

Addressing overgeneralization of

-ED

- This lesson focuses on irregular past tense verbs.

- It is designed to create awareness of irregular past tense verbs for students that have mastered use of the past tense with out mastery of irregulars which, according to Krashen should occur first.

This lesson addresses language at the word level

1) Baseline Assessment: assessment of past tense irregular verbs.

2) Building the Field: Group discussion and review of irregular past tense verbs.

3) Team Jeopardy: Students work together to analyze and use knew knowledge of irregular verbs.

4) Cloze worksheet in partners

5) Co-construction of Paragraph: Based from a text, using 4 irregular verbs, student will explain what they did for summer vacation.

6) Individual Paragraph: What I did for Summer vacation.

7) Re-administer Baseline assessment

Objectives

Content Objectives:

The learner can identify and use irregular verbs correctly avoiding -ed.

Language Objectives:

The student can define irregular verb through the support of a graphic organizer, use them correctly in a sentence supported by a partner, and write a paragraph correctly using 4 irregular verbs and the graphic organizer.
