Symptoms

Causes

- caused by a deficiency of vitamin B1 also known as Thiamine.

- Beriberi is common is places where rice is the main food, such as Southeast Asia

- rare in the United States because most food consumed by Americans are vitamin enriched.

- In the United States Beriberi can be commonly found in alcoholics.

- Wet beriberi

- awakening at night short of breath

- increased heart rate

- shortness of breath with activity

- swelling of the lower legs.

- In extreme cases, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome

- Breastfed beriberi

- Pale skin

- Restlessness

- Diarrhea

- Muscle wasting

- Edema in arms and legs

- Heart failure and nerve damage

-Beriberi can be fatal if not treated

- Pregnant women and anyone with hyperthyroidism need extra Thiamine in their diet.

- Prolonged diarrhea and vomiting and inhibit you body’s ability to absorb thiamine and some disease weaken you body’s ability to use thiamine.

- Dialysis and high doses of diuretics can also increase risk of Beriberi.

- Dry beriberi

- difficulty walking

- loss of feeling in hands and feet - loss of muscle function of the lower legs

- mental confusion/speech difficulties

- pain

- strange eye movements

- tingling

- vomiting
