Waverly and lindo
When Waverly finally gets angry enough with the way Lindo is treating her and Rich, she plans on giving her mother a piece of her mind. She arrives at her mothers home; where Lindo is sleeping on the couch. Waverly instantly has a terrible vision that her mother is dead. Waverly then tells her mother that she is marrying Rich where she is surprised that her and her mother have a sincere conversation and realizes that her mother truly cares for her.
waverly has always been annoyed with her mother hovering around her while she practices chess and wishes to be independent. Waverly makes comments like "Don't be so old fashioned ma, i'm my own person." Although she is independent she searches for her mothers approval constantly. She fears what her mother will think about Rich and wants her to accept him. Waverly gets upset when her mother says that it is "too late" for her to be Chinese. This upsets Waverly. Waverly's mother seems to mock her when it comes to Rich, and Waverly becomes embarassed.

Waverly is named after their address "Waverly place." Waverly is the only daughter in the family. At a church party waverly receives an old chess set; and begins to love the game and quickly learns the rules and strategies. Waverly meets an elderly man in the park, and he becomes her mentor in chess. Waverly runs away after getting fed up with her mother trying to show her off. Waverly takes her mother out to lunch to try and tell her mother that she is marrying Rich; but cannot because her mother is constantly criticizing her and Rich.
Lindo remembers match maker choosing her one year old husband. When Lindo is 12 a flood destroys her families home and belongings and leave her to be raised by her future husbands family. Lindo is treated as a servant. Lindo prepares for her wedding at 16. Lindo later struggles with marriage and plots a way to get out. Lindo ends up with enough money to come to America. Lindo has a daughter Waverly, and teaches her the art of invisible strength. Lindo went to work at a fortune cookie factory where she met an-mei, who introduced her to Tin Jong, and eventually get married.
