Meeting "Lady Macbeth" and her baby?

The Death of Malcolm II and the Rise of the beloved King Duncan

"Macbeth" is the English form of the Scottish name Mac Bethad mac Findlaích who was indeed a real historical figure. According to history, Mac Bethad was born in 1005 near central Scotland in the same year that his grandfather, Malcolm II son of Kenneth II, will be crowned king of Scotland. Mac Bethad was an important child, his father was Findlaech MacRuaridh the earl of Moray* and his mother Doada was the daughter of Malcolm II.

* The earl of Moray is kind of like the thane from the play.

Mac Bethad is going to be elected into the same position of Gillecomgain's and that of his father. Very similar in the play where Macbeth is awarded the Thane of Cawdor after the previous one is executed for treason by the king.

Lady Macbeth finally comes into the picture as Gruoch ingen Boit, who was married to Gillecomgain and had was pregnant when the baby daddy was burned for his crimes. Because Mac Bethad is a real gentleman he is going to become her new husband AND is going to adopt the child Lulach mac Gille Coemgáin.

Unlike Shakespeare’s play where Duncan is the good guy who everyone loves, in reality King Duncan was a pretty arrogant leader with poor army leading skills. Duncan had a need for power and felt that he had to demonstrate it by leading attacks against territories that threatened him and his throne.

Malcolm I

Duncan's father was Crínán of Dunkeld who was married to Máel Coluim mac Cináeda the daughter of Malcolm II and sister of Mac Bethad's mother Doada. This entitled Duncan to the throne when Malcolm II perished just as much as it did to Mac Bethad but Duncan was elected.

. . .

Mac Bethad's Era of Ruling

An invasion led by King Duncan and his nephew Moddan with an army in which Mac Bethad resided in. One of the attacks failed and the army section that Mac Bethad was located in was wiped out leading some like Mac Bethad to join the opposing side and counter attack against Moddan. Mac Bethad eliminates Moddan and would also slay Duncan in battle when leading the army into the Scottish capital where he is crowned king of Scotland.

Kenneth II

Duncan left a lot to desire in his ruling due to his lack of leadership qualities making most people create riots against the newly crowned king of Scotland.

Thorfinn

For the remaining years that Mac Bethad would rule as king there really was not any terror or tyranny going on as depicted by Shakespeare, in fact the opposite was occurring, most people liked Mac Bethad and he was naturally a good ruler to his people. He ruled for 17 years as a great leader.

Duncan I

Both Duncan and Mac Bethad have their characters completely mixed up in Shakespeare's portrayal. In the play

Duncan is the old guy that everyone would mourn the death of, the strong leader who knows what to do, and a

king for the people when in reality he was a power seeking freak who led with poor tactics and rarely took the advice of his advisers. Mac Bethad on the other hand was depicted as a hardworking man in the play who just walked right into the position of being king through no inheritable means when the real Macbeth earned

the throne through hard work and a reasonable inheritance.

Malcolm III

Lulach

However in 1052, English lords would flee into England and through unfair treatment, Malcolm MacDuncan son of Duncan who fled when his father died, would attempt to lobby them in order to create a rebellion. Malcolm never let go of the belief that he was the rightful inheritor of the throne and in 1054 with the support of Siward an earl, they waged war against Mac Bethad that lasted 3 years.

Mac Bethad would be defeated in Dunsinnan after losing important allies including his uncle Thorfinn who Mac Bethad joined in the counter attack against Scotland. He surrendered by granting Malcolm lands that wouldve pertained to him if he was the inheritor of his father. Mac Bethad tried to flee and was killed by Malcolm’s men. Lulach would later take the throne and rule for 7 months before he was killed by Malcolm who then took the throne.

Formerly known as, Queen Gruoch ingen Boit of Scotland, not much is known about this historical figure and it appears that William Shakespeare’s “Lady Macbeth” and this person have little in common. That being said, most of the history tied to this person was essentially created by William Shakespeare through the creation of a savage and unstable “Lady Macbeth” character. Gruoch was born around 1010 in Scotland and her father is Boite mac Cináeda. She is the grand-daughter of Kenneth III king of Scotland. Gruoch was married to Gillecomgain the earl of Moray. Gruoch’s later married Mac Bethad after her husbands death. Speculation is alive as a result of Shakespeare’s interpretation that she helped establish the death of King Duncan. No evidence supports that Gruoch took part in such a thing and it is factual information that King Duncan was killed in a battle with Mac Bethad.
