Magic and Witchcraft

By: Rachel, Yona and Gidon

This article talks about how Witchcraft is used throughout Othello. The author of the article talks about a few of the instances where witchcraft/magic is displayed. For one was in the beginning when Brabantio thinks that Desdemona has been influenced by witchcraft to fall in love with and marry Othello. He talks about how Brabantio suspects Othello of using magic. The author later concludes about how witchcraft is not used by Othello or even Iago, who is instead cold and uses reason for evil.

Quote 2

In this scene Barbantio is arguing with Othello. Barbantio does not believe that his daughter, Desdemona, has ran off with Othello by her own will. He Tells Othello...

"Damned as thou art, thou hast enchanted her!" (I.ii.83)

Barbantio believes Othello has put a spell on her or used some kind of magic to make Desdemona fall in love with him. Brabantio sees no other explanation why his daughter would run of with a moor.

Barbantio is telling Othello they know he did something to Desdemona.

"I therefore apprehend and do attach thee]

For an abuser of the world, a practicer

Of arts inhibited and out of warrant.” (I.ii.96-98)

He explains that he must of casted a spell on her to trick Desdemona to love him. They still don't believe that Desdemona could fall in love with a person like him.

In this scene Barbantio is telling Roderigo that he had told him before to stay away from his place.

"My (spirit) and my place have in (them) power

To make this bitter to thee." (I.i.115-116)

Barbantio is telling Roderigo that he has plenty of power to do anything to him if he pleased. .
