The book had a scene where Gogol and Mo go to Paris for a late honeymoon. During this scene, Gogol realizes that Mo has her own identity without him and away from New York. Through this whole trip he feels like an outsider and feels he does not fit in with Mo and her French friends

The movie took this scene out completely and I think this really took away from the theme of identity. You don't see him feeling like an outside, and like his wife is this great person with a great life, while he doesn't really have that.

The book shows the inner struggle that Gogol has with his name

The movie does not show him hating his name, it only shows that he was made fun of

"The sight of it printed in capital letters on the crinkly page upsets him viscerally. It's as though the name were a particularly unflattering snapshot of himself" (Lahiri. 45)
