Prayer to Saint Philip

O Glorious Saint Philip, at the Last Supper you said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father and it will be enough for us." Help us to make this our prayer also and to seek God in all things. Obtain for us the grace to know the Father and Jesus Christ whom he has sent - for in this does eternal life consist.

The day after his call, when Peter was about to set out for Galilee, Jesus met Philip and called him to the Apostolate with the words, "Follow me".Philip obeyed the call of Jesus Christ and did as he was told. (John 1:43-45).

  • At the Last Supper, Philip asked Jesus to show them the Father. In doing so, he provides Jesus with the opportunity to teach his disciples about the unity of God the Son and God the Father. (John 14:8-11)

Life & Work

Before the feeding of the multitude, Jesus Christ turned to Philip and asked him: "Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?" and the Philip answered to him: "Two hundred penny-worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little" (John 6:5).

  • Philip is always listed fifth of the apostles.(Matthew 10:3, Mark 3:18, Luke 6:14, and Acts 1:13)
  • He waited in the upper room with all the other apostles. (Acts 1:13)
  • Philip appears most often in the gospel of John

Life- brought St. Nathaniel to Christ, Tradition says Philip preached in Greece and in 80 AD was crucified upside down (stoned) at Hierapolis in Phrygia by Emperor Domitian. St. Philip’s relics were taken to Rome to the Basilica of the Twelve Apostles.
