The Olmecs

The Olmec Civilization was the first major civilization of Mesoamerica. The Olmecs lived in southeast Mexico in the mountains, forests, or swamps. The Olmecs influenced the rest of the Mesoamerican civilizations including the Mayans and the Aztecs.

The beginning of the Aztecs

1400 AD

Why did they end?

The mystery of the Mayans

It is still a mystery! The Olmec's were very reliant on just a few food sources, which means if there was a shortage, they could starve. Or it is very possible that they killed each other into non-existence.

Like the Olmec empire, nobody is quite sure why the Mayan Empire died out. Based on the Smithsonians most recent study, the most likely cause of the Mayans dying out was a drought that hit the Yucatan Peninsula. One of the other popular theories is civil wars killed most of them off.

The Aztecs

The Aztec Empire was the last major civilization in Mesoamerica. The Aztecs were located around central Mexico and were made up of three Nomadic tribes. The Aztecs, like the Mayans, were very religous and built temples for their gods. They belived that you needed to sacrifice a human everyday, which makes them one of the most cruel mesoamerican civilizations.

The Mayan Civilization starts

1400 BC

The Mayans

The Mayan Civilization is possibly the most important civilization in Mesoamerica. They were very mathematically advanced and created a detailed 365 day calendar. The Mayans lived in city-states all around the Yucatan Peninsula going into Belize and Guatemala. Mayans were very religious and built temples for their gods.
