Prefix
A prefix is a group of letters added before a word to alter its meaning and form a new word.
in = not
in + correct = incorrect (not correct)
in + human = inhuman (not human)
over = excessive (a lot)
over + eat = overeat (eat a lot)
over + charge = overcharge (charge a lot)
est = most
smart + est = smartest (most smart)
cold + est = coldest (most cold)
mis = wrong
mis + understand = misunderstand
mis + dialed = misdialed
Suffix
A suffix is a group of
letters added after a word
to form a new word.
less = without
hope + less = hopeless (without hope)
end + less = endless (without end)
dis = not, opposite of
dis + approve = disapprove (don't approve)
dis + agree = disagree (don't agree)
re = to do again
re + think = rethink (think again)
re + read = reread (read again)
er = more
fast + er = faster (more fast)
crazy + er = crazier (more crazy)
ment = action or result
punish + ment = punishment
move + ment = movement
un = not, opposite of
un + fair = unfair (not fair)
un + able = unable (not able
