These are the four key areas of dance analysis. ALL dances can be broken down into these areas and be analyzed using them.

ACTIONS

These are WHAT the dancers do.

Think of them like the NOUNS in sentences.

There are 6 basic dance actions that all movement can be classified as.........

JUMP

TURN

TRAVEL

STILLNESS/

BALANCE

GESTURE

TRANSFER OF

WEIGHT

GESTURE

This is where a body part moves with NO WEIGHT ON IT. They can be described as pedestrian and abstract.

PEDESTRIAN GESTURES are those that look like everyday actions and movements.

ABSTRACT GESTURES are all other movements, that do not mimic things.

TRANSFER OF WEIGHT

This is where the body weight changes position.

Transfer of weight includes walking, rolling, pivots, leans and rocking motions.

STILLNESS/BALANCE

This is when a dancer is not moving. This is still classed as an action as it requires muscle control, strength and stamina to perform convincingly.

SPACE

This is WHERE the dancers perform.

This covers all of the floor space AND the levels that the actions are performed on. Includes Pathways.

STAGE SPACING

The directions are from a PERFORMER'S point of view.

There are 3 LEVELS that actions can be performed on.

HIGH

MIDDLE

LOW

PERSONAL SPACE is the area directly around the dancer.

WHOLE SPACE is the entire performance area.

DYNAMICS

This is HOW the actions are performed.

Think of them as the ADJECTIVES in sentences.

Dynamics usually occur in OPPOSITES.

SLOW

FAST

DIRECT

INDIRECT

RELATIONSHIPS

This is WITH WHOM the actions take place.

This links both to people, objects, aural accompaniments and timing.

Common Key words for relationships are unison, canon, no of dancers, mirroring, physical contact.

PEOPLE: These are the other dancers on the stage.

PROPS/OBJECTS:

These are THINGS that people can dance with.

AURAL ACCOMPANIMENT: This is the sound that accompanies the dance. It can be broken down into these categories; Silence, Found Sound, Natural Sound and Scored Music.

This is where the WHOLE or PART of a body rotates or turns.

This is a elevation OFF the floor.

TRAVEL

There are 5 types of jump...

This is moving from one point in space to another.

TIMING: is how the dancer relates to the accompaniment. This includes UNISON, CANON and PAUSE.
