The Korean Conflict was a result of the cold war and broke out because of European and Asian countries falling to communism. President Harry S. Truman saw the different countries falling to communism and feared that if Korea fell, then the next country to fall would be Japan, an important trading country. President Truman also did not believe in communism and wanted to stop it so the United states provided The Republic of Korea (South Korea) with soldiers and weapons. The USSR joined forces with The Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea (North Korea) resulting in a war. The main allies of South Korea were the Unites States and Australia. The mail allies of North Korea were the USSR and China, who were also communist countries. The leader of North Korea at this time was Kim ll Sung who was allies with Joseph Stallen, the leader of the USSR. The Leader of South Korea at this time was Syngnam Rhee and Dean rusk who was a secretary to both President John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson and chose the border line of the 38th parallel for the country boundaries. Approximately 7,564 Utahans Fought in the war and it left a lasting impact on America by costing us over $2 billion to provide supplies and protection to South Korea as well as over 50,000 American lives.
The Vietnam Conflict began because before World War II, Vietnam was under French Rule. During WWII when France was invaded by the German, the Vietnamese took the opportunity to start their own leadership, ruled by Ho Chi Minh. After WWII ended, South Vietnam was put back under French Rule whereas North Vietnam was put under the rule of the non-communist China. However, the Chinese treated the Vietnamese poorly and many people began to support Ho Chi Minh. In 1946 the chinese retreated, leaving North Vietnam to rule itself. In late October of 1946, the French announced they were to reclaim Northern Vietnam, which lead to the Vietnamese citizens fighting to keep their independence. However the true war did not start until 1956. The North Vietnamese allies consisted of Russia and Communist China. The allies of Southern Vietnam or Free Vietnam were The United States, Thailand and South Korea. Between one forth of all Vietnamese citizens killed by Agent Orange and more bombs dropped during this war then all of WWII, the war was not viewed kindly in America. The American people protested the war greatly.
The Korean war impacted Utah by providing jobs to the military installments placed in Utah during WWII. It continued to bring prosperity to an already thriving Utah. The Vietnam war also brought this factor to Utah but it brought along a unwanted side effect. The citizen of Utah were tired of the continuous war and began to protest the war efforts. Many of the Utah protests took place on college campuses and were preformed by college students. The 2 major protests groups in Utah were the leftist organization and the students for a democratic society (SDS). These two groups both had teach-ins to express their opinion to the Utah
public.
The Super Duper Comparison
In both wars the Communist super powers China and the USSR aided North Korea and North Vietnam. In both wars the US considered using the atomic bomb, but fortunately didn't. Both wars were a part of the Cold War between the USSR and the US. These two wars were very similar in the way that it was a policing action to control or bring forward communism into Asia. They were different in very large way, Public's reaction. The Korean war was thought of as a distant war with not many troops. The public did not act in a majorly negative way. The Vietnam war on the other hand had a negative reaction from the American public. This was for both political and social reasons. Another way the two wars were different was the way they were fought. The Korean war was more like World war Two in that it was fought with tanks, airplanes and bombings. The Vietnam war was much different. The Vietnam war was more of a Geurilla It was fought with sneak attacks not large forces of weaponry.
