Social Reconstructionism

Principles for Social Reconstructionism

The principles behind social reconstuctionism is not only to teach about society, but to change it. It calls on schools to educate students in ways they can leave behind all forms of discrimination. This philosophy addresses racial equality, Women's rights, sexism, pollution, poverty, diseases, and drug abuse. Teachers must realize you can not change everything, so you must pick subjects that are most important to you and your students. In other words, as the old saying goes, "pick your battles.” One important social issue is honesty, or there not being enough of it in the world. Once you tell a lie, you cannot take it back, and one lie leads to another. Students must obey the principles they hold to be right, and do not compromise. Remember the old saying “ honesty is the best policy.”

Personal Analysis of

Social Reconstructionism

Social reconstructionism is a philosophy of teaching that involves students in trying to make the world a better place for everyone to live. There will always be the poor and racial problems, but just maybe this type of teaching would help. I feel that most schools today should teach the way that is best for the students. The world is changing everyday, and with the internet and computers, children need to know how to get the best education possible. Schools need to do more to make students want to stay in school, instead of dropping out as soon as possible.

Contributors of Social Reconstructionism

He founded the Social Reconstructionism philosophy based on two concepts. The first concept is people can destroy civilization. The second concept is people can create a civilization by health and humanity.

He wrote a book called Pedagogy of the oppressed, which talks about working with poor illiterate peasants. This led him to believe that this philosophy will help the poor control and improve their lifes.

He wrote about his views that schools should equip students to deal with real world problems.

Social Reconstructionism

in the classroom

I would like to be able to help my students understand the problems our world is facing and teach them to look for answers. I know we can not change the whole world, but maybe we could do good in places that really need it. I would like my students to know to always tell the truth. I would like to teach responsibility. Even small children can be responsible for washing their hands and brushing their teeth. I would also teach them not to envy what others have, but be happy with what they have. I hope my students will have courage to stand up for what is right. I would also let them know I want them to do their best.
