Martha Graham

born in 1894, while she was young moved to Los Angeles from Pennsylvania while she was young with her dad. During the train ride west she saw the American expanse that gave her the inspiration for most of her work including Appalachian Spring and more. Martha first experience with dance was asking her dad to go see a performance in the New York Ballet at the age of 16. Which she fell in love with the theater and continued to go see until she started dancing herself. The phrase that she lives by “movement doesn’t lie” comes from when her dad caught her in a lie and told her that

Martha Graham

By 1904 she opened her own dance school in Germany because she was bored. She began deforming the way people danced the Ballet with a new way to dance which eventually became more natural and flowing style. She had a dance troupe that was eventually called “The Isadorables.” Thru her dance she entertained and made people angry with her revolutionary style. Which lead her to perform in the famous thatre des Champes – Elyses in Paris in 1913. She then created a dance school in Moscow, Russia and Paris, France.

POST MODERN MUSIC VIDEO

Started dancing for money at age 6. She moved around a lot from Chicago to New York then London. In 1899 she got away from the Tropes and traditions of that time.

This got her to search for truth in movement as her goal. In her early twenties she studied and preformed with the Denishawn Company that is known for its modern approaches to dance. She eventually moved to Greenwich Village in New York. She then joined the Follies and lead to her starting her own dance troupe. She invented her own dance style from emotion, breathing and spare, angular forms. Her company was going thru hard times, in the beginning but eventually they were appreciated and became famous worldwide. She performed until she was 75 and kept teaching until she dies in 1991. Her Martha Graham company was the first integrated dance company in the United States.

MARTHA GRAHAM

She was tragically killed in France in 1927 by her scarf getting caught in her sports car tire. She had several affairs and broken marriages that resulted in her having 2 kids. They eventually both died in a bizarre crash where the car rolled into the Seine. She not only revolutionized dance but the way that woman pursued what they wanted even if it was considered to be compromising. She also wrote books and led the way to woman’s liberation.

ISADORA DUNCAN

WHO WAS ISADORA DUNCAN? ISADORA DUNCAN DANCES AND DANCE TECHNIQUE. MARCH 28, 2012. CHOREOGRAPHER AND PREFORMER ISADORA DUNCAN.

I CHOOSE ISADORA DUNCAN AND MARTHA GRAHAM BECAUSE THEY ARE THE TWO MOST INFUENCEIAL WOMAN IN THEIR TIME THAT CHANGED MUSIC FROM BALLET TO POST MODERN DANCE. IF IT WAS NOT FOR A SMALL HANDFULL OF PEOPLE THEN BALLET WOULD OF CONTINUED ON FOR SEVERAL MORE GENERATIONS UNTIL SOMEONE ELSE BRAVE ENOUGH TO CHANGE THE WAY PEOPLE PRECEIVE DANCE.

THESE LADIES DID NOT HAVE IT EASY AND NEITHER DID THERE COLLEGIES AND PREDICESORS, BECAUSE THIS TYPE OF DANCING THEY WERE TRYING TO CREATED WAS DIFFERENT THEN BALLET BUT LESS HARMFUL THEN BREAKING BONES AND FALLS ASSOCIATED WITH BALLET. PEOPLE DID NOT LIKE THE NEW DANCES AND WOULD THROW FOOD ON STAGE, BOO AND HARESS THEM EXPECIALLY MARTHA GRAHAM. THESE DANCES DID EVENTUALLY CATCH ON AND BECOME POPULAR THEN EVOLVED INTO DANCES SIMILAIR TO MODERN DANCE.
