Varsity Boys Basketball Season Comes to a Close at PAL Semifinals
Varsity wins the PAL quarterfinals against Hillsdale
The team set their goals at the start of the season. One of them was to win PAL. Starting here, you can follow the team's progression through the season
The season had both highs and lows, but leadership and determination helped them pull through. According to Hickman and Raul Rodriguez, the best part of the season was finally defeating Burlingame and winning their first tournaments. One of the team's biggest challenges was to overcome the dissapointment of losing four games of the league season and adjusting to a new coach. The team's senior leadership and positive communication helped to support and to push the team to play their hardest. Rodriguez explained that they had a "team bond that is key for success."
Varsity loses to their semifinals opponent.
The team’s amazing players have helped lead them to success. Matt Ennis, Ricki Hoffer and Mitchell Hickman have led the team scoring. Ennis was named 1st team all league and Ricki was named to the 2nd team, with Hickman named on honorable mention. Raul Rodriguez has been a lead defender along with Tramel McClough, Arthur Ricks and Eric Bet. Coach White says, “We've had other guys step up throughout the season and do things that don't always show up on the stat sheet.”
Woodside Boys Varsity ends a great season. Hopefully their dedication and determination will have better luck next year!
Coach White goes on to explain, "our success really is a by-product of the work put in and it's application to game situations. The times where we haven't played well are due in part to the inability to apply what we've learned to the games. The team's chemistry is at an all time high and the coaching staff has dedicated an inordinate amount of time developing practice plans, scouting, watching film, and working with the guys in order to prepare them to be successful.”
The players' dedication has allowed them to go as far as they have. As their coach says, “I think the guys have done an excellent job buying into the program and the things that we are trying to do here. I think with their dedication to the film room and the weight room early on, they have developed a work ethic that the players are able to take out onto the practice and game floor and those things then translate into success."
Despite their losses, the team still has high hopes for next season. Mitchell Hickman hopes "to take what we learned from this year and get even farther into the playoffs than we did. Play more, work harder and eventually win more games and continue our improvement as a team."

Varsity's great coach can't be overlooked for leading his team to victory. “I have had a great time working with these guys and hope that they have learned something from me other than just about basketball. I hope that they take away the importance of preparation in life and in work, the importance of responsibility and that no one player's personal stats are bigger than the team's chemistry and success.”
Woodside's Boys Varsity basketball had an amazing season, with hopefully much more excitement to come for next year. With the PAL quarterfinal won, the team prepared for their next adversary. As head coach Phillip White explained, their“next opponent [was] the biggest.”
