Materials

Features

Why Wood Is Often Used:

Wood is used more often than not for two main reasons. One, trees are plentiful where the Woyo live. Second, the carvers believe that trees have a spiritual soul, therefore they are the best material to make a symbolic mask with.

Woyo masks have an oval mouth, rectangular eyes, with an oval face shape, often with a pointed chin. It also has a line down the forehead and nose. Many times it will be decorated with spots, stripes, beads, bones, animal skins, shells, and vegetable fibers. It is large in size, and uses contrasting colors.
