5 Phases of Throwing a Football

1. Position: The process of setting up with a shoulder width base, knees slightly bent, upright position, straight back, and shoulders pointing towards target. The center of mass is running through the middle of his body. In this phase, the quarterback's eyes are focused downfield and locked-on to his target.

2. Windup: The backswing of the throwing arm and raising of non-throwing arm, for balance. The center of mass is still pretty well in the middle of Vick's body.

3. Initial Movement: The throwing arm begins to come forward, building momentum for the throw. The non-throwing arm lowers to the side of the body, the hips slightly twist and move forward, bringing the back shoulder to the forefront. This motion causes the center of mass to shift forward. To produce maximum force all possible joint movement will contribute.

4. Critical Instant: The ball is released at peak of the follow through. This allows for maximum velocity.

5. Follow Through: The throwing arm continues through the motion in the direction of the intended target. The back foot slides forward with continuation of momentum.

Improvements

Purpose of the Skill

Position:-Wider stance, bring torso back atop legs

-Point shoulders in direction of target

Windup:

-Non-thowing arm needs to be raised

-Stance needs to be tighter (legs closer together)

In the National Football League, the purpose of throwing a football, is to complete a pass to a reciever; and essentially gain yards and points.

Initial Movement:

-Hips should be twisted further to increase power.

-Front foot should straighten out

Critical Instant:

-Back foot could move laterally outwards, to become more in-line with the front foot.

-Again, the front foot should be straightened out.

Follow Through:

-Back foot needs to come closer to front foot.

-Bring the back knee forward to become almost in line with the front knee
