Metics in Ancient Athens

Because Athens was so wealthy, many foreigners came to live in Athens. These people were known as metics.

During times of war, metics would fight for Athens just like a citizen, but even though they were like citizens, metics were not considered citizens. Even a man who was born in Athens could not become a citizen if his mother was a metic.
