Power Imbalances

Power Imbalence

Def: When Power is inequitably distributed in a group and dominance becomes the focus, system wide power struggles often ensue.

Compliance: Group Power

Compliance is the process of consenting to the dictates and desires of others.

Compliance involves both obedience to authority and conformity to group norms.

Alliance: Coalition Formation

Resistance: Dragging your feet

Alliances are associations in the form of subgroups entered into for mutual benefit or a common objective.

Resistance is normally the choice of the less powerful. Resistance is a covert form of communicating noncompliance, and it is often duplicitous and manipulative.

Defiance: Digging in your heels

Defiance is an overt form of communicating noncompliance. Defiance, like resistance, is a prevention form of power, but unlike resistance there is no ambiguity or subtlety.

Significance: Self-Empowerment

Discussion Questions

1. How are obedience and conformity similar to and different from each other?

When group members grow tired of being dominated by more powerful individuals, they can do more than merely resist or defy.

2. Why are defiant members a threat to the group?

3. In what ways do aggressiveness and assertiveness differ?

less powerful members can enhance their relative influence or they can balance the power in the group by increasing their value to the group.
