DESCRIPTIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS

VOLCANIC HAZARDS

A volcanic bomb is a type of ballistic projectile which is considered as a blob of material ejected from an eruption in a molten state rather than as a solid rock.

01

DEFINITION

VOLCANIC BLOCKS VS. VOLCANIC BOMBS

Volcanic Hazards are phenomena arising from volcanic activity that pose potential threat to persons or property in a given area within a given period of time.

Ejected as solid rock

Ejected in a molten state

BALLISTIC PROJECTILES

DESCRIPTION AND NEGATIVE IMPACTS

VOLCANIC BLOCKS

EFFECTS

Positive

Negative

Ballistic Projectiles are volcanic materials which are directly ejected from the volcano's vent with force and trajectory. These objects endanger life and property due to the force of impact of falling fragments, but this occurs only close to an eruption vent.

  • Force of impact endangers life & property.
  • Many people can be injured:
  • Releases new rocks and minerals which can be used for construction
  • Lacerations
  • Forced Trauma
  • Burns
  • Bruises
  • The high kinetic and thermal energy of projectiles can puncture, dent, or melt structures.
  • loss of agricultural lands

DESCRIPTION AND CHARACTERISTICS

03

A volcanic block is a solid piece of rock that has been expelled from a volcano during an eruption. The term covers rocks of various sizes, but the minimum size is 2.5 in (64 mm) in diameter.
