-On August 2, 1964, the destroyer USS Maddox, while performing a signals intelligence patrol as part of DESOTO operations, was attacked by three North Vietnamese Navy torpedo boats of the 135th Torpedo Squadron

Some historians believe this never happen. However this is what President Johnson told congress.

-The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (August 7, 1964) gave broad congressional approval for expansion of the Vietnam War.

-In other words gave the president authority "to take all necessary measures".

- Repealing the resolution was meant as an attempt to limit presidential war powers. The Nixon administration took a neutral stance on the vote, denying that it relied on the Tonkin resolution as the basis for its war-making authority in Southeast Asia.

- Even though the congress repeal the gulf of tonkin resolution; taking the authority away from the excutive branch. Nixon still used his power to continue on with the war.

It initially took President Nixon an extra 3 years untill he withdrew his troops.
