Concerto Form In the Classical Period

The Concerto is a musical composition in ABA form.

In the Classical Period solo concerto was the favoured concerto.

First movement

• Longest and most complex movement

• Usually in sonata form

• Contains exposition , double exposition, development, recapitulation and cadenza

Second Movement

• Slow and lyrical; usually in simple forms, such as ternary

• Usually in adagio, allegro or largo

• In a key related to the tonic key

Third Movement

• Fastest movement and typically shorter than the first

• Usually in allegro molto or presto

• Very often in rondo form, but could be modified to contain some features of the sonata-allegro form

• Some contain a cadenza to bring the piece to an end
