The Little Albert

Experiment

Two Major Types of

Conditioning:

  • Classical conditioning
  • was a famous psychology experiment conducted by behaviorist John B. Watson and graduate student Rosalie Raynor.

- is a technique used in behavioral training in

which a naturally occurring stimulus is paired

with a response.

Elements of Classical Conditioning

in the Little Albert Experiment

  • Operant Conditioning
  • The participant in the experiment was a child that Watson and Rayner called "Albert B.", but is known popularly today as Little Albert.

What is Behaviorism?

- (sometimes referred to as instrumental conditioning) is a method of learning that

occurs through rewards and punishments for behavior.

The Little Albert experiment presents and example of how classical conditioning can be used to condition an emotional response.

  • refers to the school of psychology founded by John B. Watson based on the belief that behaviors can be measured, trained, and changed.
  • also known as behavioral psychology, is a theory of learning based upon the idea that all behaviors are acquired through conditioning.
  • Neutral Stimulus: The white rat
  • Unconditioned Stimulus: The loud noise
  • Unconditioned Response: Fear
  • Conditioned Stimulus: The white rat
  • Conditioned Response: Fear
  • Conditioning occurs through interaction with the environment. Behaviorists believe that our responses to environmental stimuli shapes our behaviors.

The Stare and Respond

Theory

Leaving Academia:

  • had an affair with Rayner.

This theory focuses mainly on the behavior of an individual that can be modified or changed, whether it be positive or negative, if an individual is being watched or observed knowingly by another.

  • began working for an advertising agency

where he remained until he retired in 1945.

  • had poor relationships with children

Through this theory, the behavior of an individual can be measured if effective or neutral in certain events through actions, emotions, and responses.

  • spent his last years living a reclusive

life on a farm in Connecticut.

  • burned many of his unpublished

personal papers and letters before his

death.

Definition of Terms:

John Watson's

Career

  • Stare- to look fixedly or vacantly at someone or something with one's eyes wide open
  • began teaching psychology at John Hopkins

University in 1908.

  • Respond- say something in reply
  • Psychology as the Behaviorist Views It
  • Stimulus- an agent, action, or condition that

elicits or accelerates a physiological or

psychological activity or response.

  • "Psychology should be the science of

observable behavior."
