Native Americans of New Hampshire

Passamaquoddy Tribe

The Passamaquoddy Tribe used to live in what is now Maine and Southeastern Canada, and lived along the coast, making their main food source fish catching. The men went out to hunt with their sons while the women stayed home to cook and take care of the extended family, like the other tribes. Their populations today in Maine are about 2,500, and are much smaller in Canada.

Pennacook Tribe

The Pennacook people lived in the area just south of the Abenaki and had the strongest ties with the European Settlers. They were surrounded by hostility by surround Indian tribes, so an alliance with the English settlers were made. This made them more vulnerable to diseases brought by the English, so their tribe populations declined

Malecite Tribe

Traditionally, the Malecite grew corn, as well as hunting and fishing for food. Wood, stone, and ceramics were used to make utensils, tools, and weapons. A tribal council was made up of a war chief, a civil chief, and representatives of each family. Most tribal questions, and war matters were decided by this council.

Location

History

These Native Americans were originally settled in the region of what is today New Hampshire. When colonial settlement began however, many Indians were displaced. Today most of the New Hampshire Native American population is located in Canada.

After settling in their area from traveling through the land bridge between America and Asia 10,000 years ago, the Indians developed four seperate tribes known as the Abenaki, Malecite, Passamaquoddy and Pennacook. They lived a very stone age lifestyle and participated in the French and Indian war. Their populations dwindled away after European brought new diseases to them that they could not fight against, and they were exploited after taxes, enforced labor, and slavery took their tolls on the Natives.

Abenaki

One of the two main tribes primarily located in New Hampshire were the Abenaki people. They used the resources their environment provided them and made things like food, clothing, and homes out of it, along with hunting and gathering. Their major crops were corn bean squash and tobacco. They spoke the Iroquoian and Algonquian Languages. The villages they lived in were situated along rivers and they lived in either longhouses or wigwams with their extended family.
