The word rupee (then called rupyam) was coined by Afghan emperor, Sher Shah Suri, in 1542. It was given the form of a silver coin that weighed the equivalent of 178 pieces of grain. Other coins of different weights and types continued to circulate.

The English rupee was introduced in 1758.

In 1835, a silver rupee of uniform weight was adopted throughout British India.

In the 1860s, the first series of British bank notes was issued.

Until 1893, India operated on the silver standard. But with the dramatic drop in value of silver throughout the second part of the 19th century, the gold standard was adopted.

In 1949, the first rupee note of the independent nation of India is issued.
