Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Give us the strength to see grace in all,

Unite us with your presence.

Teach us to look out for those who feel belittled and hopeless,

and for those who feel invisible and voiceless.

Open our eyes to understand more of your justice and mercy for not only ourselves, but also for those suffering injustice in the world.

Amen.

Three Types Of Justice

Justice

Legal Justice:

  • Catholic tradition is closely tied to justice
  • In the first years after Jesus' death and resurrection, Christians celebrated their call to justice by sharing the bread and body
  • This continues to unite us with the "Just One" and with each other
  • Justice is an important part of the gospel and as well as the act of Holy Communion
  • The connection of Justice is first in the person and then in the teaching of God
  • Refers to relationship of the individual to society
  • Also known as contributive justice
  • Legal justice was primarily known for societies obedience to laws
  • Now, it has become more of what individuals in society can contribute beyond the keeping of law
  • We are expected to not only obey but contribute laws for the greater good
  • Legal justice today means to contribute to life in society
  • "Ask not what your country can do for you- ask what you can do for your country." -John F. Kennedy January 20, 1961

Commutative Justice:

Distributive Justice:

  • Pertains to the relationships between individuals and institutions that have legal statues on a person
  • Institutions= corporations (retail stores, school, sports clubs etc)
  • Contracts and agreements that make up this relationship is commutative
  • Certain cases, its not personal (ex. clothes shopping)
  • Commutative justice is important because the agreement is based on trust and confidence that the other person will respect the agreement
  • Society is built on trust, without it society can slide into anarchy and mistrust.
  • Pertains to the relationship of the government or society to the individual
  • It deals with all sorts of goods that are not economic
  • We have to recognize that in order to discuss the unequal distribution of goods, we must know that justice operates differently with each issue.
  • The good of citizenship-deals with conditions of becoming a citizen
  • The good of security and public assistance (welfare)- responds to the needs of those who have the right to public protection and help
  • The economic good- regulates the area of money and merchandise
  • The good of offices and positions-where the distribution is not to be based on heredity or wealth, but on qualifications
