Romeo: Tragic Hero

A tragic hero is of higher than ordinary status and morals. He will be ultimately responsible for his own fate.

'Oh, I am fortunes fool!" Act 3.1

Romeo is the tragic hero because of how his actions affect the story so drastically. He is very impulsive which gets him into a lot of trouble. Romeo would be typically considered as a lover not a fighter, but sometimes he just snaps and losses control. For instance when Mercutio was kilt it was his fault, but he wanted to just act like it was all Tybalt's fault, and then kilt Tybalt. That shows that he has limits. Also Romeo knowing that he had a bad feeling about going to the Capulet's, he set himself because if he never met Juliet then Mercutio wouldnt die, neither would Tybalt, him or Juliet.

Juliet: Tragic Hero?!?!

A tragic hero is of higher than ordinary status and morals. He will be ultimately responsible for his own fate.

  • Juliet could be considered a tragic hero because of how she had to make major decisions and sacrifices, such as choosing Romeo over her family. She was a difficult child if she would have just accepted Paris as her husband she would have to pretend die then actually kill herself. Many death could have been prevented if she had listened to her parents and her nurse who wanted the best for her.

The Turning Point

The changing of the mood of the play from light-hearted and playful to seroius.

The death of Mecutio could be considered the turning point, because of is death Romeo kilt Tybalt and then was banished causing Juliet to have to choose between Romeo and her family, friends, lyfestyle. After Mercutio is kilt, Romeo like looses control and become irrational and irresponsible by blaming his best friends death, when in actuality he had took part in the event as well as Tybalt. Also maybe if he confessed his love for Juliet to Tybalt and explained why he couldn't fight Tybalt, Mercutio wouldn't. In this scene you see another side of Romeo that has yet to be exposed, he was no longer just a happy guy who was in love, now there was just anger and hatred that possessed him, giving him the ability to kill

The Catatastraphe

The event that culminates in the hero's downfall.

Tragic Flaw

The error or Flaw of the Hero, that results in his fall from grace.

The catastraphe was Juliet's faking her death. When she faked her death, Romeo didnt know and him being impulsive kilt himself. Then Juliet kilt herself, they both realized that they couldnt live without each other and found no purpose in life without their love.

Romeo's tragic flaw was that he was so impulsive. He never really gave himself any time to think, or to process things. He lets his emotions constantly get the best of him; for example when Mercutio was kilt Romeo lost control and went after Tybalt, blood for blood. But he knew the consequences of killing someone, he knew that if he did that, that him and Juliet could no longer be together.

The Reversal of Fortune

The change in tone and mood based of the action in the turning point.

Since Mercutio and Tybalt's death , the turning point, Romeo is depressed and solemn. Juliet is sad about her cousin being kilt, but she justifies his death by thinking about how it could have been Romeo who died, so she is grateful that it was only Tybalt. Becaucse of the banishment of Romeo, Juliet is forced to choose between Romeo and her family. Juliet refuses to marry Paris, and her family threatens to kick her out. So Juliet is solemn and angry at the same time for having to choose and her and her family fight, then she fakes her death, so she can run away with Romeo.
