"History is the memory of time, the life of the dead and the happiness of the living." Smith
The rise of particular plantations”began. A year earlier, the Virginia Company, having no profits to pay its investors for their joint stock investments, began to grant land to private stockholding groups for settlement in Virginia. Anyone who owned a share of Company stock received 50 acres (would later be 100); anyone who came before 1616 was entitled to 50 acres (would later be 100); anyone who came after 1616 and paid his/her own way was also entitled to 50 acres (would later be 100). 1617 Pocahontas died at Gravesend, England. Rolfe left his son with an uncle in England and returned to Virginia.
After a week or so after establishing Jamestown 23 men made and exploration up James River and met chief Powhatan and the Powhatan Indians . The colonist made a fort that was strong enough to protect them against Indian attacks.Captain Christopher Newport returned to England on the Susan Constant(one of the original boats), loaded with wood and other natural resources for sale in English markets. By the fall over half of the colonist died from either starvation or disease.
James I of England granted a charter to the Virginia Company to establish colonies in Virginia. By December, 104 male settlers sailed from London instructed to settle in Virginia,to find gold and claim land for England.Three ships that sailed to Virginia were – Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery .
The three ships landed at Cape Henry , present day Virginia Beach and had a surprise attack by the Indians and went back into their ships. A couple of days later they moved onto James River to settle and stopped at Kecoughtan (present day Hampton) where the Indians welcomed them. On May 13 they reached Jamestown Island and on May 14 they stepped ashore and began to protect the area against the Spaniards and Indians.
A fleet with more than 300 people were going to arrive to Jamestown but, sadly there was a shipwreck in the Bermuda triangle. In September, John Smith was injured and returned back to England the following month. He never came back to the Chesapeake area of Virginia. For leadership,George Percy became the president, but only till new leadership had arrived. During the winter many people died due to starvation. The population of Virginia dropped from 300 to 90. Only 60 people were left at Jamestown.
By 1614, John Rolfe had sent his first shipment of tobacco to England .In the same year, Pocahontas was baptized and given the Christian name Rebecca.
Sometime in April, she married John Rolfe. Peaceful
relations were established temporarily between the Powhatan Indians and the English settlers
.
De la Warr became ill and returned to England with Dr. Lawrence
Bohun. George Percy was left in charge in Virginia.By May,Sir Thomas Dale arrived in Virginia to assume leadership as deputy
governor. He had brought settlers, food, and supplies. He had also helped develop the martial law. By 1612,The Virginia Company received a Third Charter from James I, granting more land to the Company, including the Bermuda Islands. This charter allowed the Company to run lotteries to raise money.
Sir Thomas Gates and the other survivors of the Bermuda Triangle shipwreck arrived at Jamestown. He found the fort in ruins and the remaining 60 colonists there were starving. Gates tried to established new laws to maintain order. But by,1610, June Due to lack of supplies, Gates decided to abandon the settlement at Jamestown and return to England. While sailing down the James River he heard that Lord de la Warr was arriving with new settlers and supplies from England. Lord de la Warr soon came into control as the appointed Governor of Virginia. Gates left for England. De la Warr set about rebuilding the colony. He expanded the strict
code of laws established by Gates and also fixed the fort's triangular wall.
John Smith was put into power by being the president of the Virginia council . He set many laws, which one of required men to work if they wanted to eat. Christopher Newport arrived in Virginia with another supply of goods and settlers, including the first two women, Mistress Forrest and her maid, Ann Burras. Between February and May, Jamestown started to prosper. Forty acres of land were cleared, a well was dug, the church re-roofed, 20 cabins built, a blockhouse built at the isthmus, and a new fort came across the river from Jamestown. Leadership adopted a more aggressive policy towards the Powhatan
people.
I hope you enjoyed my presentation about the beginning years of Jamestown.
John Smith was captured by a Powhatan hunting party when he was on an expedition. The chief's daughter Pocahontas saved Smith's life. Smith was then released to go back to Jamestown and Captain Christopher Newport came back and brought back supplies and more men. By January the original 104 members decreased to 38 members. Then, in February fire broke out on James Fort, repairs started by the spring. During the summer John Smith left Jamestown to explore down the Chesapeake Bay and mapped down rivers, lakes, and tributaries.
