Fun Facts About Greece!!!!

  • We invented the first coin system.

The city of Argos was built on the fertile Argolid plane in eastern Peloponnese in Greece. The city was made upon two hills called Aspis and Larissa. the city was 289m in height.

Argos reached its greatest domanince when under the rule of King

Pheidon. This city was a long time rival to Sparta for the domanince of the Argolid. Much of Argos' power disappeared when Cleomenes I of Sparta took over the city in c. 494 B.C.

Argos was most likely the center of Dorian operations in the Pelopenesse and from that time onward it was one of the domanant cities in Ancient Greece. Argos also produced many important sculptors such as Polycletus. In modern day and age there is also a small town called Argos on the site of the ancient city.

History of Argos

The patron goddess of Argos was Hera. Hera was married to Zeus and she is the goddess of women and marriage. She also was the goddess of the starry heavens and sky. She wore a crown and held a royal lotus-tipped staff.

Some historic events in Argos are Argos allied with the Athens and after the Athenian League in 418BC Argos allied with Sparta. Also, Argos rose in 146BC and became the center of the Achaean League. One more historic event is Argos allied with Thebes and participated in the wars with Sparta.

In Argos, we are considered one of the most powerful of the Greek city-states. We may not have the military greatness of Sparta, or the cultural greatness of Athens, but we are still very strong! We have been involved in a war against Sparta and we where assisted by Athens. This war was called The First Peloponnesian War, which started in 460 B.C and ended at 445 B.C. After fighting with the Athens for 15 years, the Spartans eventually won. We also fought in the Corinthian War with Athens, Corinith, and Thebes. We eventually backed Sparta against a wall with the force of 4 city-states. The Persians soon started helping Sparta, we then signed a peace treaty stopping the war. We are good allies with Athens. Our name is from the son of Zeus and Niobe, Argos.

How Members Should act in Argos

The Argives should act in Argos by:

1. Show unity. Encourage your fellow citizens to be in class each day and on time. Take opportunities outside of class to inspire fellow Argives.

2. Be model Greeks. Be respectful and cooperative. Question authority if you must, but be respectful when voicing objections. Be sure to support and carry out obediently the directions of your teacher, and your daily archon.

3. Cheer Argive victories. Learn the Greek names of your citizens whenever you can.

4. Don't try to outdo other groups. Just be Argives---------hard working, loyal, competitive, and superior! Try to capture any events that have to do with art, sculpture, architecture, and or mathematics. Try extra hard in the categories

Goals of the Polis:

The goals of the Polis are to use the letters Alpha and Ro as our advantage, and try to win as many events as we can. We try to keep accurate records of events. Furthermore, we are proud to belong to Argo and be an Argive. We show this by dressing similarly to each other. We also want to fully protect our citizens, include them, and have them lead a full and abundant life. We also hope to not be banished from our Polis because we consider that worse than death. We also want to show respect to our gods. Additionally, we respect other members of our Polis and treat them with dignity.
