Government in Sparta

The government in Sparta was an oligarchy. An oligarchy was when a small group of people ruled a country. In this case there were two kings who ruled the country. They did not have absolute power though. They shared their power with a council of elders named the Ephors. They had 28 members that were all over the age of 60.

Below the Ephors was another group called the Apella. They consisted of men over the age of 30. They helped make decisions with the Ephors even though the Ephors were higher in power then the Apella.

Rules of Citizenship

People of Sparta had to undertake an education process known as the agoge. Usually, the only people who were eligible to take this process were the Spartiates. They could trace their ancestry back to the original inhabitants of the city. In the agoge the Spartans learned to hunt, to dance, and to sing. In the military portion of the agoge, the Spartans trained for the military ( For example, pain tolerance ), they learned to be stealthy, and they learned to be loyal to one's group.
