J.R.R. TOLKIEN

To a prospering English banker and his faithful wife in Bloemfontein, South Africa, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on January 3rd, 1892*.

The world may never have heard of the Tolkien or The Lord of the Rings if it weren't for two young people:

- an anonymous student & his School Certificate paper

- the young son of an English publisher by the name of Rayner Unwin.*

WWI:

The Great War was the first man-made devastation of the 20th century.The war was fought between the Allies – primarily Russia, France, Britain, and the United States, and the Central Powers – Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and Japan. (1914-18)

WWII:

Well, what's a "hobbit"?

WWII was declared on Germany by France and Great Britain. Millions were murdered and millions more killed in battle over the next six years. It would prove to be the most brutal out of all past wars, ending on August 15, 1945.

THE COLD WAR:

“Better Dead Than Red”. In 1949, President Truman announced that the Soviet Union exploded an atomic weapon. America was wrapped in doubt of its people. Truman ordered a security sweep that lasted between 1949-52, investigating 6.6 million government employees but only 500 fired from “questionable loyalty”.

PHILOSOPHICAL MOVEMENTS

OBJECTIVISM

The movement, created by novelist Ayn Rand (1905-1982), that celebrates the power of man’s mind and encourages individualism, integrity, and self-reliance. Rand was a philosopher as well as a screenwriter – she was also a champion of individual rights.

PLURALISM

It’s philosophic idea that encourages people to engage in diversity. It also supports crossing the line of difference and tolerating as well as accepting variances. Philosopher, Sir Isaiah Berlin was the founder of pluralism.
