Theodore Roosevelt took part in a lot of physical activities especially as a teenager. He decided at this age that he wanted to "make his body" . He did just this by taking part in many athletically demanding activities like gymnastics, weight-lifting, and hiking (etc.)
As a child Theodore Roosevelt had quite a few problems regarding his health. For starters he had horrendous asthma which required him to sleep slouched over in a chair or even propped up in bed at night. Eventually, with age the struggles got a bit easier.
He also wanted to initiate a powerful defense for the United States so that no one could pick on our weaknesses
