TRADITIONAL QUESTION

COMMON QUESTIONS SPECIFIC TO SOCIAL WORK

TRADITIONAL QUESTION

Why have you selected a career in social work?

What is Your Greatest Weakness?

What question often is the first asked in an interview?

Do you believe in short-term or long-term treatment?

Tell Me About Yourself

Tell me about a time you were in a disagreement over a treatment plan.

Knowing what you know now, is there something you would do differently in the management of one of your fieldwork cases?

I graduated a bachelor's degree in social work because I understand the importance of providing high quality patient care. I had the opportunity to work as a student therapist managing a caseload of 20 patients suffering from anxiety, depression, and mental illness. During that time I prepared treatment plans for patients ranging from 13 to 87 years old. I also worked as a psychiatric/medical social worker intern at a local hospital and gained experience managing the patient discharge program as well as working with nurses, physicians, and patients in a health care setting. With my strong work ethic, I can be a part of continuing your hospital's mission of excelling in providing excellent patient care.

Your academic pursuits and some of your long-term career goals

Qualities/experiences relevant to the job

Talk about your experience working with diverse populations or patients different from you.

How do you describe your personal boundaries?

The trick is to be honest and stay positive. Give examples of ways you're working to overcome your weakness.

Which of the following should you leave out of your "Tell Me About Yourself" answer?

Your enthusiasm

for and interest in the position

A. Your degree(s) & academic field(s)

B. Number of undergrads you supervise in a research setting

C. Your future entrepreneurial plans

D. Information about your family

BEHAVIORAL QUESTION

S

Situation

STRESS QUESTION

Advertising revenue was falling off for my college newspaper, The Arkansas Traveler, and several long-term advertisers were not renewing their contracts.

T

Task

My goal was to generate new ideas, materials, and incentives that would result in at least a 10% increase in advertisers from the previous year.

Can you describe a time when you had to solve a problem in an innovative or creative way or in a manner that hadn't previously been tried?

We have ten other applicants just as (or more) qualified than you.

Why should we hire you?

A

Action

I designed a new promotional packet to go with the rate sheet and compared the benefits of our circulation with other ad media in the area.

R

Result

We signed contracts with 11 former advertisers for daily ads. We increased new advertisers by 16% over the same period last year.

Use the opportunity to describe your specific strengths and unique skills.

What do you need to know before a job offer is made?

Check or (if you didn't before the interview) to calculate salary ranges for jobs in specific geographic areas.

What are my salary expectations? How much do people generally make for this job in this geographic location?

What is the cost of living in the geographic location?

What do I need to make to sustain my personal budget?

How do I stall appropriately and professionally?

Use a Cost of Living Calculator, available at or to compare the cost of living between cities.

A budgeting worksheet (like the free version at kiplinger.com) can help determine your expenses and sources of income.

  • "I'm interested in the job and company. The initial salary isn't as important as the opportunity."
  • "I've done some research and will consider a reasonable offer."

THANK YOU NOTES

If that doesn't work, you may try to redirect the conversation by asking about other parts of the compensation package (benefits, holidays, vacation, etc.)

And if all else fails, you may decide to tell them the salary RANGE you expect.

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS TO ASK

LAST QUESTION

Which question should you NOT ask the interviewer?

  • What would a typical day be like for someone in this position?
  • What type of person are you looking for?
  • How much travel is required?
  • What opportunities for advancement exist?
  • Is there any reason I am not one of your top candidates? (This gives you an opportunity to address any concerns they have.)
  • How would I be evaluated in the position?
  • What would make me successful in this role? Are there opportunities for training, mentoring, etc.?
  • Could you describe the remaining process of this search and the timeline for hiring someone?

A. What is the starting salary?

B. What is your next step in the hiring process?

C. Why is this position open?

D. Could you describe a relatively typical day in this position?

You should already have appropriate prepared questions based on your prior research.

Always send thank you notes after the interview - handwritten instead of via email, unless a hiring decision will be made within 48 hours.

If you have an interview committee, write down their names (or obtain them from a company website) and send the thank you note with a personalized message for each.

Mail them within 24 hours to make sure they arrive in a timely fashion.

A Smile & Positivity

If you can't say something nice, don't say

anything at all.

Let's hope none of the 59% of employers who've encountered this behavior are chiclephobes.

Websites

FIVE of these are not appropriate for a traditional interview. Can you find them?

Step #1: Research

Many interviews, especially those in the first round, may be via phone or Skype.

Employers may also request a Skype (or phone) interview when the candidate is long-distance, thus saving on travel expenses.
