Social Hierarchy in the High Middle Ages

Monarchy

The monarchy consisted of Kings and Queens. Kings came to power through conquest, election or inheritance. They ruled through their courts which were initially private households but later developed into more formal institutional structures.

Nobles

In medieval society Nobles provided work, land and protection to the peasants as well as provide funding, supplies and military service to the king.

Knights and Clergy

The Clergy was a very important and influential part of medieval society. They were the ones who ran the churches. Some even had a great deal of power politically. They were the mediators between God and men. The Knights main duties were to learn how to fight and to serve their lords/nobles.

Merchants and Professionals

Merchants were business people who participated in retail and trade. Professionals consisted of doctors, scholars and master craftsmen.

Peasants and Serfs

Peasants and Serfs were generally manual laborers who would work on farms or in factories for their lords.
