Unimportant Facts:
He joined the military at the age of 15. Called himself a surgical dentist, who would extract decayed teeth
Pierre Fauchard was born in 1678. He is widely known for being the writer of "Le Chirurgien Dentiste" ("The Surgeon Dentist".) This book described basic oral anatomy and function. He was also a French Physician.
PS...
This looks....TERRIFYING
The first real device used for orthodontics was a small metal place anchored to teeth from which force could be put on and pull in the direction to straighten.
Before Fauchard, no other dentist had proposed any way to move and straighten teeth other than Celcus. Who proposed that applying pressure to a tooth that was erupting in the wrong direction would help it. Fauchard advised other dentist to take a look at their patients mouth and if necessary, use one of his number of methods to straighten teeth.
Fauchard said in his book that he had been told that the late Mr. Carmeline had successfully straightened teeth but he never published. So this means that Pierre Fauchard was the first person to document teeth straightening.
