Pierre's Practices

  • After leaving the French Navy, he started his work as a professional dentist.
  • As his practice flourished he attracted MANY people from across the country.
  • In his book "Le Chirurgien Dentiste ou Traité des Dents (The Surgeon-Dentist, or Treatise on the Teeth)" he described in detailed methods on how to extract decay and restoring teeth.
  • His scientific, comprehensive approach was commended by fellow professionals and this laid the ground for future dentistry

Early Life of Pierre

  • Started training as a surgical dentist at the age of 15
  • He started training while in the navy
  • He was very interested in the diseases of the mouth as he saw many diseases out at sea
  • Scurvy was a very big part of being out at sea, also called "seamans disease"

Pierre Fauchard was born in 1678. He is widely known for being the writer of "Le Chirurgien Dentiste" ("The Surgeon Dentist".) This book described basic oral anatomy and function. He was also a French Physician.

Orthodontics by Fauchard

The first real device used for orthodontics was a small metal place anchored to teeth from which force could be put on and pull in the direction to straighten.

Before Fauchard, no other dentist had proposed any way to move and straighten teeth other than Celcus. Who proposed that applying pressure to a tooth that was erupting in the wrong direction would help it. Fauchard advised other dentist to take a look at their patients mouth and if necessary, use one of his number of methods to straighten teeth.

Fauchard said in his book that he had been told that the late Mr. Carmeline had successfully straightened teeth but he never published. So this means that Pierre Fauchard was the first person to document teeth straightening.
