Men's Clothing

The Wealthy

  • Jerkin—A short velvet or leather jacket, usually sleeveless, similar to a vest/waistcoat

  • Upper Hose—Upper hose or full trunks that extended from upper thighs to waist

  • Nether Hose—The stockings that covered the lower edges of the leg. They were usually rolled above the knee and secured by garters
  • Wore expensive fabrics - silk, brocade, velvet, and cotton
  • Fur was used for linings and trimmings
  • Darker colors were used to show off embroidery and jewels that were sewn into the clothing
  • Style was very important to the wealthy

Middle Class Women

Sumptuary Laws

  • Laws that specified who could wear what types of clothing
  • Certain colors and materials were allowed depending on class
  • Wanted to keep the "lower" class from wearing fancy clothes

Flat Cap—A hat that is flat with soft crown and moderately broad brim

Renaissance Fashion

  • Wore much simpler clothing
  • Wide sleeves and tight bodices were common
  • Laborers wore linen
  • Used wool for clothing

  • Showed ones social status
  • Styles went in and out of fashion rapidly
  • Disregarded comfort - most clothing restricted movement and most styles of shoes made it difficult to walk

  • Were considered "small adults"
  • Dressed very similar to parents
  • Both boys and girls wore dresses as babies and toddlers
  • Boys were "breeched" around the age of 7, where they were given first pair of breeches
  • French Hood - Heart shaped cap

  • Funnel Sleeves—Sleeves that start big and tighten toward the cuff

Women

Shoes

  • Would often wear at least 5 layers of clothing - a skirt, underskirt, bodice, over-bodice or vest, hoop and collar
  • The more layers the wealthier one was
  • Corset - a garment that was stiffened so that it cinched the waist in and flattened the breasts
  • Hair was almost always covered with a hat or scarf
  • Hair was braided or worn in loose waves
  • Blonde hair was very popular - women would often bleach their hair or wear wigs
