Aeschylus

He is still celebrated today because he was a revolutionary playwright who further enhanced and ameliorated Greek drama by expanding the number of characters in his plays. This allowed for more conflict and earned him the title of father of serious Greek drama.

Death of Aeschylus

yes, that's a tortoise......

He had a darker outlook on life, writing in his plays such things as:

“They sent forth men to battle, But no such men return; And home, to claim their welcome, Come ashes in an urn”

― Aeschylus, Agamemnon

“Unanimous hatred is the greatest medicine for a human community.”

― Aeschylus, Eumenides

One can argue that he had a such bleak outlook on things in order to avoid disappointment and accept reality, as proven by

"“I gave them hope, and so turned away their eyes from death”

― Aeschylus, Prometheus Bound

Quotes

  • "You [Medea] are a woman of some knowledge, versed in many an unsavory skill."-Medea

Facts:

  • "Come and see our catch:

the animal we Cadmean daughters caught and killed…

and not with nets or thronged Thessalian spears

but our own strong white hands." (259)-The Bacchae

  • "Oh, the women wounded men, set men to flight…that was not without some unknown power." (119)-The Bacchae

Sophocles

Each quote exemplifies how Euripides diversified his plays through giving his women powerful and intelligent roles.

  • Known as the "Most Tragic Poet" because he focused on the inner lives and motives of his characters in a way previously unknown
  • Unique among the writers of ancient Athens for the sympathy he demonstrated towards all victims of society, including women
  • A difference between Euripides and his older colleagues was: his characters talked about the present more controversially and more pointedly than did those of Aeschylus and Sophocles, sometimes even challenging the democratic order

Quotes

"Remember, nothing succeeds without toil"

"Money! There's nothing in the world so demoralizing as money"

A genuine man should cherish memory, if he gets pleasure still from anything. Kindness always engenders gratitude. A man who gives up his good memories will no longer be a noble, worthy man.
