I believe that society can have a huge impact on our thinking and belief system. A lot of the times,as a student nurse I saw other nurses and staff members generalizing patients based on how they are portrayed in the society.
One of my patients who was a street worker was admitted due to puss wounds all over her body. I had her as my patient for two days in a row, and i could see that she was in a lot of pain. Some of the staff members always denied her request for more pain medication, stating that she is a street worker probably used to a lot more stronger drugs. One of the days, she asked me that her boyfriend wanted to come visit her and if she was allowed to have visitors, without even a second thought I said of course she can.I went and informed my buddy nurse about the same and I was shocked from her answer. She stated that, "God knows who her boyfriend is, don't you know she is a street worker"! My buddy nurse also told me to go tell the patient that she can not have her "boyfriend" come visit her and that she would have to go downstairs to visit him.
I do not want to be that nurse, who cannot keep her biases aside while caring for her patients. We all have different belief's, some are our own and some are made from the society where we live. But as a nurse and a health care professional, we should be able to keep our biases aside and provide the quality of care every patient deserves.
I believe that environment can shape our mood, ability to cope and increase or decrease our stressors.
I agree that everyone of us have these stressful times in our lives which are unforeseen, but to be able to have a supportive environment which will help us deal with those stressful situations is critical.

I believe that health comprises of our mind, body soul and spirit and it is not just the mere absence of disease.
Health for me consists of living a life to its fullest that is without stress and fear.If I am sad, depressed,or have a headache, my spirit is low and my mind is shut off;I will not consider myself healthy.
My philosophy and belief mainly comes from my experience of seeing the nurses at the medical clinic teach about health, chronic disease management and empowering the patients with the knowledge about their health. The teachings helped the patients to manage their own health issues.
I strongly believe that your mind, body ,soul and spirit are the main components of a person's health and they are all connected.
Health is subjective for every person based on their life experiences and knowledge.
I believe that deep inside all humans have the same desire to be cared for and feel respected keeping our cultural and ethnic disparities aside.
As a student nurse working at the Misericordia in the emergency step down , I had many encounters with the vulnerable population. Some patients were Aboriginals, street workers, homeless and also from the remand center. For me to be able to give them quality care , it is important that I built the trust with them. I made sure that I kept my biases and generalizations aside and treated them as an individual. In the end as humans all we desire is to be understood and respected for who we are, without the fear of being judged.
I believe that every individual is unique and has their own unique talents and abilities.
One of my patients, who was Aboriginal and also homeless, he was at the hospital due to violent injuries to his head, eye and leg.In the beginning i found it very hard to connect with this patient as I knew very little about Aboriginals and their cultural values. On researching more, I understood that they do not like to make an eye contact and also do not like if somebody told them what to do without an explanation.
I respected his culture, talked to him politely and explained every little detail about the medications and dressing changes. He opened up to me and was able to tell me that he needed better pain management because of his wounds. I was then able to get a consult with the physician and the pharmacist to help him manage the pain better.
The nursing profession requires roles that allow the nurse to gain understanding of the fundamental responsibility of nursing through insight and education
(Wyatt,D.A., 2013,p. 267)
As a prospective nurse in putting my belief into practice, i am going to make sure that i provide holistic care to my patients.Taking into consideration their lifestyle, family, support systems and also what is important to them about health. Also taking into consideration of all aspects of my patient's health being psychological, spiritual, physical & Social.

As a prospective nurse, in my clinical practice i will focus my nursing practice towards patient-centered care. Be a good listener and build the trust with my patients, so they feel comfortable to ask me questions about their health.I also want to take every opportunity to teach my patients about their health ,and do a thorough discharge teaching which i hope will help them manage their health better.

When I moved to Canada in 2007 from India, I never thought I would be in nursing. This was mainly due to the stereotypical image of nursing in our society. I did not think I would ever be able to say ,"I am a Nurse".
In August 2007 , I started my first job at Medical Clinic under the Primary Care Network as a Receptionist. I believe that it changed my whole perception of nursing , medical system and healthcare.I started to understand the meaning of RN and the different roles RN acquires, and it is not just limited to the hospital.
I started to learn more and more about nursing and nurses. At the clinic, we have Geriatric nurse, Diabetic Nurse and a Mental health nurse. I was able to shadow and volunteer with them , doing home visits and also helping them translate Punjabi to English.
