1) At what stage in someone's life does the self-creation of one's identity typically take place?

2) Based on the reading, what kind of actions could cause society to define someone as a "troublemaker"?

-As a white person:

-I can if I wish arrange to be in the company of people of my race most of the time.

-I can easily find academic courses and institutions which give attention only to people of my race.

-I can be pretty sure that my neighbors in such a location will be neutral or pleasant.

-I can be sure if I need legal or medical help, that my race will not work against me.

-I am never asked to speak for all the peoples of my own racial group.

3) What is your reaction to the term "white privilege"?

4) Is it confusing...comforting...guilt inducing?

5) Do you think it is politically loaded? If so, why?

Who Am I?

White Privilege vs. Racial Profiling

Domination and Subordination

Figuring out Dimensions

-The answer depends in large on who the world around me says I am.

-The self-creation of one's identity is commonly experienced during the period of adolescence.

-When a person is part of the dominant group, that aspect of their identity is taken for granted by them.

-Most of us are both dominant and targeted at the same time.

-Dominant groups set the parameters within which the subordinates operate.

-Dominant groups do not like to be reminded of the existence of inequality.

-Subordinate groups have to focus on survival and become highly attuned to the dominate group as a way of protecting themselves.

-According to Ruth Frankenberg (1993), says the whiteness may be defined not only in terms of race or ethnicity but also as a set of linked dimensions.

-These dimensions include 1) normative race privilege, 2) a standpoint from which white people look at themselves, others and society and 3) a set of cultural practices (often unnoticed and unnamed).

Normative Race Privilege

-Emerging perception that being white in the US no longer means automatic privilege.

-Do whites really feel threatened?

-In Chicago, according to the 2000 US Census, the percentages of blacks in Chicago was 37% (Myers, 2003, p. 130), not nearly what the University had anticipated.

-Some young white people, believe that being white is a liability. Why would they fel this way? Or are they really denied access to many opporunities, that are shared with other minorities?
