Giant written by Plaxico Burress was supposed to take us into the life of an NFL superstar but it was so poorly written and dry I didn't even make it to page 50. The cover is pretty cool though. That is what drew me in to read it.
Civil War by John Feinstein is the greatest sports novel written. I may be a little biased but he goes behind the scenes of the rivalry on the gridiron between Army and Navy.
My bookshelf has books I read when I was ten to books my dad has given me that are extremely boring and hard to read. I mainly have sports books and war books that range in sophistication from super easy to read to very complex and graphic. I also have a model Hummer and some binoculars (I don't know why...).
Why I Like It
Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell
1. It is action packed from cover to cover
2. The description Marcus uses makes me feel like I am in the middle of the firefight.
3. I'm a sucker for well-written war novels.
4. The novel hits home to me because I will be faced with decisions like Marcus faced while I am in the Navy.
Soldier Boys by Dean Hughes is the story of an American teenage soldier and a German teenage soldier during WWII. What made me tear up was at the end, the German boy was wounded and the American tried to help him but was shot and killed by the Germans. It shocked me!
1. You won't want to put this book down. It's a big time page turner.
2. It isn't a normal, feel-good book. It is heart pumping and heart breaking.
3. It gives you a huge rush of patriotism.
This is the true story of SEAL Team 10 as told by the only survivor of Operation Redwing. Their mission was to kill a known Taliban leader rumored to be close with Bin Laden. The four man team faced daunting obstacles from the beginning with radio problems to a goat herder compromising their position with hundreds of goats. The Team was forced to make a decision; execute the young boy or let him go free and run the risk of him telling the Taliban where they were. They decided to let him go and he immediately ran to the Taliban. Within minutes, hundreds of Taliban fighters were on their position. After hours of relentless fighting, all team members were killed and Marcus was the only one alive. He survives 5 days with the help of local villagers. He believes he survived for the sole reason to share the story of how courageous his teammates were with the whole world.
