Student Bill of Rights

By Johnny Coppley

Pertaining to the 14th Amendment

All of these rights listed pertain to the 14th amendment because they give basic rights to the student body within reasonable circumstances. Some of these rights help the students to become more independent which will help in their developing as a functioning human in society. Just call this the 3rd Bill of Rights.

Student Rights #10

Students Rights #9

All punishments for students should be chosen by a selected group of peers. That group would be chosen by the school administration. The peers would decide on a reasonable punishment, and then the punishment would be approved or denied by the principle. If the punishment seems cruel and unusual, the janitorial staff can deem the punishment unconstitutional.

All students are allowed to bring outside food or drink. This would ensure that students are fully fed to their own standards so that they will have energy to go through the day. If they choose to eat food of the unhealthy variety that is their choice. Students will have to learn that certain independent decisions may have consequences in the future. They don't have to buy unhealthy food.

Student Rights #8

All students are permitted to wear comfortable clothing, such as pajama pants or yoga pants, during school hours. This would make school feel more relaxed and comfortable to be in.

Students Rights #7

Homework will not be required to any students, but optional homework will be provided by all teachers. Sometimes homework is assigned to students who already thoroughly understand the material and it would simply be tedious to waste time on excess amounts of work. This puts a student's grades in their own hands.

Student Rights #6

Students will not be permitted to drive to school until their junior year to allow plenty of parking spots for upperclassmen. This would give all students up to a year of experience of driving so that accidents would be less prevalent in the school area when driving to and from school.

Student Right #5

All rising-senior students will be permitted the right to request specific teachers when registering for classes the next year. This will allow the students to be happier with their overall classes, and interaction with teachers their final year of high school will be improved.

Student Right #4

All students will be permitted to order lunch from off-campus as long as a waiver is signed and turned in a day in advance before the student gets their lunch. All off-campus food must be delivered by the business being used so that students will not be leaving the school grounds. If the food is late in arrival, the student will not be permitted extra time for lunch because it was his/her choice to order off-campus food.

Student Right #3

Students will be required to have a gym session every day throughout high school for 30 minutes. The time period of the day will be determined by the individual school. These sessions will decrease obesity, and studies have shown that stress is reduced for people when they vent through physical access.

Student Right #2

For all students maintaining a 90% or above average, they will be permitted to arrive at school 20 minutes later than the school of their attendance's opening time. This will reward students for exceptional work and study habits as well as the remarkable effort that comes along with their good grades. This will allow extra sleep for loss of sleep due to school work.

Student Right #1

All students are entitled to one hour of free time each day that may be used for specifically studying, homework, or self-selected reading. With this right, students will be allowed to reduce stress of overwhelming amounts of homework by lightening their workloads by one hour.
